The meaning of the phrase “beyond the shadow of a doubt” has always stumped me. A “doubt” is indefinite, and so is a “shadow” and then we are asked to go one step further into ambiguity by adding “beyond” to the definition while the whole phrase is used to define certainty. But while pondering the meaning of the phrase I began imagining just what a “shadow of doubt” might look like in substance.
