If you have a tree stump you would like carved, or a special design you would like to have ordered, you will find most of the answers to your questions on the following pages.

Most questions about obtaining a chainsaw sculpture revolve around pricing and my availability.  I am aware that many people who work with a chainsaw, or "chainsaw carvers", price their work by the foot. That only works if you carve the same thing over and over again.  I price each sculpture for commission on its own merit and characteristic difficulties. For example, if I were asked to carve a soldier in uniform, the price would certainly be different for one that would be holding a rifle as to one without.  It would be difficult to apply a hard fast price per foot that would allow for differences such as this. Still, I spend much of my time writing lengthy answers, many times with pictures I have painstakingly drawn, to answer these inquiries. Then never hearing from them again. It is for this reason I have decided to put a pricing schedule on my site as a guide to individuals who are looking to commission a sculpture either On Demand or On Site.

Access to price information is free but must be requested by signing in at Mail List and requesting a password or by emailing me directly by clicking email button at the very bottom of this page.

Be forewarned I have come to understand that most people who write me asking for pricing of sculpture, are price shopping and are looking for the best deal.  I totally understand this.  It's what the internet is all about. I think it's fair to say that if I don't come in at low bid I don't get the work. But I won't get involved in competitive pricing if I am aware it is going on.  The main reason for this is that the "quality standard" factor is too elusive. I am not a trade contractor like you may hire to remodel your kitchen or paint your house. If you had a room  that needed to be painted, you would certainly want estimates on the cost.  But here there is an unspoken standard that is understood between all parties.  All persons estimating the work are bound by the same implied "quality standard".  They know the end result will require no runs, no missed spots, no brush marks, and no splatters where the paint doesn't belong.  All parties price their work.

When you hire an artist for work you deal with an ambiguous standard.  One that can only be resolved by studying the artist's preceding body of work.  From this you can determine the value you are likely to receive if you commission them to do your work.

I am inclined to decline requests for my work just as often as not, because I don't find them challenging or inspiring enough to spend my time on.  I realize this may sound arrogant.  But it isn't if you look at it simply as I do.  I only carve a subject as many times as it takes to perfect it to the best of my ability. In other words I don't repeat a subject unless I feel I can make it better than the last one I made.  That's the challenge. I don't crank out repetitive figures as do many. So I can't compete against their pricing. So I don't try.  Each time I repeat a subject it takes me longer to do because It must be better than the last. Many "chainsaw carvers" find the challenge in carving the same thing faster than the last time they carved it. I won't compete against that. It's like anything else, you have to decide on whether you are looking for economy or quality.  If you happen to find both, then you have value. If it is quality you are looking for foremost, then you have come to the right place
