Working in relief can present special challenges. If you will notice, the mariners face shown here is in what is called a three quarter perspective. That is to say it is neither a straight on full face
view or a profile but it rather contains elements of both, which makes it very difficult to accomplish. The piece of wood is actually only an inch and a half thick but buy carving it in perspective it appears
to have a much greater depth. This illusion is accomplished through actual distortion of the figure. The process is oft times perplexing to create, but very satisfying when successfully brought about. .
