It takes a large pice of wood to create a action pose as in this one. That is to say most of the volume of the original piece has been removed. In a compact sculpture as in the Acadamy Awards movie award "Oscar", the figure is very compact and perhaps as little as 20 percent of the orginal block of wood would have to be removed in order to carve a figure with that positioning; whereas in the case of a sculpture such as Dragonstaff it would require removal of more than 70 percent of the original chunk of wood to produce the resulting form. I have found that the larger the volume of wood that has to be removed in a carving, the more difficult it is for me to visualize the position and proportion of the figure within the volume of wood. This requires me to remove the wood more carefully in the reveal. The consequences of this is that the time required to produce the figure can soar profoundly over that required to carve the same size figure in a rigid standing position.
